Craig’s Corner

During the last month I represented WA at the National Cub Scout meeting which was attended by BC’s from most states. From this meeting I have come back with a number of ideas which I hope to discuss and implement over the coming year.

At this meeting were also reminded of the importance of using the Scout Method and Scout Aim when we are delivering our Cub Scout program.

The Scouting Aim is to encourage the Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social development of young people so that they may take a constructive place in society as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. This is sometimes remembered as SPIES. Do you use all the elements of our Aim in your Cub Scout program?

This must be done by also using the Scout Method which is applies:

  • a structured program (our Cub Scout Award Scheme and a yearly, term and weekly planned program),
  • it uses small groups (Sixes),
  • it provides opportunities for leadership (Sixers and Pack Councils),
  • it uses the practical learning by doing and most of all
  • it does this all in a fun way

Do you attend your District Seeonee? This is a meeting of like minded Cub Scout Leaders within your District and can be great support for you. It is a place where you will always be able to get new ideas on how to continue delivering your Cub Scout programs and meeting the requirements of our Aim.

Branch Seeonee was held on Wednesday 1 July and the minutes from the meeting are attached.

CUB SCOUT ACTIVITIES

Have A Go Challenge – have you run it in your pack yet? If you haven’t run it yet you still can – the form for getting the badges is attached.

Cub Scout Wide Game – this can be run any time in 3rd term. The form detailing the theme and to get your badges is attached. Use your imagination to dream up something exciting based on the theme and remember to have fun.

Cub Scout Zoo Day (30 August) – this is a combined event with Joeys being able to attend too. Registration Forms (attached) are due in by 14 August.

Head and Tail Snake Badges – attached is the form for you to get the Head and Tail snake badges for your registered Cub Scouts. Please ensure you carefully read the notes so you understand the rules regarding these badges.

Cubilee will be held on November 7 and the theme this year is Carnival. Don’t forget there is a Badge Competition for your Cub Scouts to participate in (form attached) . This has to be in by the 30th August so they can be judges and the badges ordered. Cubilee registration forms are also available (form attached) and are due in by 30 September.

ENDURO 2010 – just a quick note to remind you that next year we will be running Enduro in the first weekend of the September school holidays. Put it in your diary now for next year so you don’t forget. This is the biggest Cub Scout Camp held in WA and a great weekend of fun.

Cub Scout Leaders Conference will be held on 24 October at a venue still to be confirmed. More details next month.

Boomerang Night for CS Leaders – why not come along to Branch HQ on Wednesday 2 September at 7:30PM with your ideas of how you run your Boomerang Challenges 2 and 8. The more Cub Scout Leaders we get there sharing ideas the better.
